Event Description: Future City is a project-based learning program where students in 6th, 7th and 8th grades imagine, research, design, and build cities of the future. Each city must incorporate a solution to a design challenge that changes each year. This year’s challenge, Powering Our Future, asks students to design a resilient power grid that can withstand and quickly recover from the impacts of a natural disaster.

Over four months, students work as a team with an educator and volunteer engineer-mentor to design a city that could exist at least 100 years in the future. The project deliverables include: creating a project plan to use throughout the project; creating a virtual city using SimCity software; researching and writing an essay; building a physical model of a section of their city using recycled materials; and presenting their city before a panel of judges at the Regional Competition. Regional winners go on to represent their region at the national competition in Washington, DC, in February.
